About Us

Sacramento Self Help Housing (SSHH) has contracted with Sacramento County and the cities of Sacramento (through SHRA), Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova and Citrus Heights to provide a free telephone and internet-based “Renter’s Helpline” to counsel, provide dispute resolution and fair housing services for residents in a housing crisis or dispute. The collaborative team focuses on tenant education to reduce housing discrimination, promote public awareness of fair housing laws and rights and assist persons with disabilities.

Partnership Roles

SSHH collaborates with Project Sentinel, Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC), and California Apartment Association (CAA) to provide tenant education, landlord-tenant dispute services and fair housing services. This is a collaborative effort to address Fair Housing concerns in all five jurisdictions.

  • SSHH will educate tenants on their rights and responsibilities and offer tenant-landlord dispute resolution. Fair housing concerns will be directed to Project Sentinel, CAA, or LSNC. SSHH will provide multi-language service to tenants.
  • Project Sentinel will investigate calls related to fair housing and discrimination to determine resolution through education, counselling, conciliation, or other appropriate attorney for legal actions.
  • CAA will provide property management training to the staff of the Renters Helpline staff as well as information to help them resolve landlord-tenant disputes. In addition, CAA will provide information and tips on renting in both English and Spanish via a free booklet distributed by SSHH or viewed on the CAA website. CAA also will provide several free seminars to educate rental owners and property managers on fair housing laws and issues.
  • LSNC will provide litigation support for fair housing claims where appropriate.

How Can We Help?

Tenants in a housing crisis or dispute need a reliable resource for information about their rights and obligations as renters. Renters Helpline provides free help with tenant-landlord and housing discrimination issues. The tenant advisors inform callers of their rights and provide them information via email, fax, or mail.

The Renters Helpline service area includes Sacramento county, and the cities of Sacramento, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, and Citrus Heights. If you live within our service area and have experienced housing discrimination or have any questions concerning your tenancy, please call.

Our housing discrimination services are free of charge and are available to persons of all income levels. Unlike many legal aid organizations, we do not limit our services to citizens or legal residents. All persons will receive assistance regardless of their immigration status.

Sacramento is dedicated to protecting the rights of renters and landlords and promoting fair housing.
